Join Us In Celebrating National Custodial Workers Recognition Day
October 1, 2023 | AUTHOR: Office Pride
There are behind-the-scenes unsung heroes, and then there are the rarely seen unsung heroes. This Oct. 2, on National Custodial Workers Recognition Day, we are singing the praises of the hard-working people who keep your workplace clean and your employees healthy.
In the not-so-distant past, custodians were rarely seen during regular business hours and thought of even less often. Most came in after the workday ended to empty trash cans, sweep, mop, vacuum and clean the bathrooms and office kitchen. A few times during the year, they might come in an extra day to strip and wax the floors, clean the windows and more.
And guess what? They were probably very happy to do it! Our 150-plus franchise locations employ full- and part-time workers to include parents, full-time students, retirees and more whose work with Office Pride Commercial Cleaning Services allow them to pay for their kids’ piano lessons, college tuition, a new car or a really special vacation.
They’ve always willingly accepted the sacrifice of free evenings and weekends to pay the bills by taking care of the rest of us while we are at our home away from home, aka “the office.”
In 2020, however, custodians, janitors and maintenance workers were among those core “essential workers” who moved into the bright light of appreciation when they quite literally helped put America back to work. At Office Pride, we have not forgotten them or how they bravely donned masks and picked up electrostatic sprayers to clean and disinfect our workplaces so we could safely conduct business during a global pandemic.
Now that the pandemic is over and everyday life is mostly back to normal, the janitorial and custodial workers have faded from the spotlight again. But like any other workers, they take pride in what they do and appreciate a sincere thank-you. So, how can you let them know they are appreciated?
Here are a few ideas:
At the Office
Stop and simply say thank you. Introduce yourself and tell the custodial staff that you appreciate what they do for you and your team. Perhaps the office manager could leave them a special treat (such as cookies or a cupcake) or a gift card for a local coffee shop.
At School
Encourage students to write a letter or draw a picture to say how happy they feel when their school is clean and shiny.
At Church
Thank the cleaning staff and tell them what a blessing they are to you and the entire congregation. Suggest that your pastor thank them publicly from the pulpit.
Anywhere
Take a moment to call the custodial worker’s supervisor and tell them what a great job the worker is doing.
It’s the thought that counts. So, however you decide to say thank you, please join us in wishing all custodial, cleaning and janitorial staff members a Happy National Custodial Workers Recognition Day!
